Dimension Data has been awarded ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) certification for its two office buildings in South Melbourne.
Dimension Data’s Sydney head office had received the certification last year. All three offices are now certified by BSI Group ANZ to the ISO 14001:2004 standard, which specifies requirements for organisations implementing an EMS, and provides guidance for those committing to environmentally friendly business operations.
The ISO 14001:2004 standard covers compliance, impact of business activities, products and services.
Dimension Data has introduced a series of environmental initiatives that have been well received by its employees and clients. Its eWaste program in particular, offers environmentally responsible removal, disposal and recycling of electronics materials, ranging from packaging materials for new products when they are delivered, to equipment at end-of-life.
The eWaste Management Service also offers physical or data destruction of electronic data storage equipment.
According to Dimension Data Australia Group Chief Financial Officer, Peter Lees, the EMS certification validates the environmental initiatives introduced into their own business practices as well as the services provided to clients.
Sustainable initiatives such as the eWaste program helped demonstrate the tangible results that the auditors needed for the EMS certification. He adds that the certification endorses Dimension Data’s environmental programs, encouraging them to support and expand their increasing environmental focus.
The eWaste week is run every six months for Dimension Data employees, providing a great opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted computer and electrical equipment from home with the safe disposal and recycling being taken care of by the company.
Till date, the program has been able to dispose of and recycle 38,000kg of eWaste around Australia.
Dimension Data has spent the past 12 months completing preparations for certification, ensuring that its EMS integrated with the company’s quality and information security management systems, which are certified to ISO 9001:2000 and ISO/IEC 27001:2005 respectively.
BSI Group ANZ performed documentation and on-site auditing for the ISO 14001 certification. Dimension Data employees also attended BSI public training courses to enhance their knowledge of Environmental Management Systems.
Nick Koukoulas, Managing Director of BSI Group ANZ comments that the ISO 14001 certification for three offices proves Dimension Data’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility across the entire business.
