A new waterborne refinishing technology from coating systems specialist Axalta Australia has received OEM approval.

OEM approval carries a lot of weight in the refinishing sector, and is required by warranties, especially in the luxury vehicle market where consumers expect nothing but the best quality when their car rolls out after repairs.

The only authorised Mercedes-Benz repairer on Queensland’s Gold Coast and Tweed Heads, H. Harvey Prestige, recently aligned with Axalta Coating Systems to install the Mercedes approved Standox waterborne Standoblue for its refinishing requirements.

Axalta’s Standox coatings range is not only aligned with OEM requirements but the next generation waterborne product along with flake analysing colour spectrophotometer improves speed, throughput and colour accuracy while delivering material savings and fast return to the client.

Running two separate operations in Queensland, H. Harvey Prestige Director Mark Wells sees the Standox refinishing range as an opportunity to standardise and measure performance criteria across both sites by using one product and the associated technologies that unify it.

He explains that Axalta’s Standox product range best fulfils the technical criteria demanded by Mercedes Benz including adherence to OEM specifications on coatings in the repair market.

According to Mr Wells, Standoblue is the latest in water technology, allowing the repairer to effectively replace solvent based products for greater environmental advantage and a finish quality that better meets the OEM finish.

Apart from product gains, Mr Wells also acknowledges the technological and support services received from Axalta as critical components that maximise returns from its major operations initiative.

Based on his 35 years in the business, Mr Wells rates Axalta’s methods for training of painters as the best in Australia. He explains that painters are put through very stringent training both off-site at one of their training centres and on-site in H. Harvey Prestige’s body shop. The painters are accredited by Axalta only after they pass the training.

Axalta also uses software to allow a new level of benchmarking for even greater business improvement. Mr Wells observes that the Axalta i-services program is a great online management tool, which allows the company to benchmark both sites against each other and also analyse KPI data to measure performance against set targets.

Management software on their colour retrieval program allows the repairer to run reports looking at consumption, mixing accuracy and mix reports for each painter across all three sites.

For example, on identical jobs, the software may identify that one site used 200ml to coat a bumper bar whereas 250ml was used at another branch, allowing them to make changes accordingly for business improvement.

Standox has attained approvals from all leading manufacturers to meet quality specifications of OEM carmakers, making the coatings range ideal for body shops and dealers. These contracted approvals set the standard for various aspects such as product systems, warranty approvals, training, services and colour management.
