The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is pleased to announce a technical dinner on Wednesday the 18th of November in Melbourne on the new National Packaging Covenant Mk3.

Gavin Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Packaging Council of Australia and Ed Cordner, Chief Executive Officer of the National Packaging Covenant will be the keynote speakers for the evening and will be discussing their November meetings with the Environmental Ministers on the NPC Mk3.

Gavin and Edward are two of the key personnel on the board who have made the presentation to the Ministers and they will be able to evaluate the minister’s decision only days after it has been released for AIP Members and non-members.

The National Packaging Covenant is working on a draft document for environment Ministers to consider in November to continue the Covenant post 2010 when the current arrangements expire. This will represent a further evolution in the management of used packaging in Australia.

This is the third Covenant of its type and it is now generally agreed there needs to be a greater awareness that for packaging to be sustainable, full lifecycle considerations need to be taken into account. Also, awareness that a single focus on recycling of used packaging may be counter-productive.

In this way, the new Covenant draft will focus more on design for sustainability, incorporating the concepts of 'cradle-to-cradle' and life cycle analysis – to ensure sustainable practices are implemented by the supply chain. It recognises that packaging policy needs to also focus on recovery strategies for energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental priorities.

The meeting will be in two parts. Key note presentations followed by an open forum led by Robin Tuckerman, FAIP, who is an industry leader in the field of NPC applications.

When - Wednesday the 18th of November
Where - Box Hill Golf Club, 202 Station Street, Box Hill (Melway ref 61 C3)
