Forklift operators should know what to do when a forklift rolls over, so that they can avoid injury.
An advisory notice from Australian Standards shows operators what to do in case of a rollover. Australian Forklift Training recommend the user to print it out and put it up on notice boards around the warehouse.
The procedure to follow when a forklift tips over is as follows:
- Don’t attempt to jump from the forklift. (The safest place to stay is in the seat. Forklifts now come with seat belts fitted to ensure the operator doesn’t attempt to jump out)
- Brace your feet firmly on the floor and hold on tightly to the steering wheel.
- Lean away from the direction that the forklift is rolling. (This is to reduce the chance of the operator getting caught under the machine)
When a forklift rolls over, things happen fast and the operator has little time to think. Only operators who thoroughly know and understand the above procedure will be able to put it into place when needed.
