The Australasian Bioplastics Association aims to increase public awareness of bioplastics as a vital long term waste management technology and sound alternative to traditional, non-recyclable plastics, representing members throughout Australia and New Zealand.
As part of this mandate, the association administers a voluntary certification scheme for verification of products that claim conformance or performance to Australian Standards AS 4736-2006 and AS 5810-2010 standards regarding the compostability of a product.
Open to member and non-members alike, this scheme has been running successfully for several years, gaining recognition by government departments, brand owners and the compost industry, among others.
The certification scheme has been so successful, in fact, that certain retail tenders for packaging have specified ABA's certification as mandatory for a conforming bid.
Products that are certified under the scheme can use the 'Seedling Logo', provided under licence from the European Bioplastics Association, to market the products compliance with the standards.
In addition, this logo provides a convenient means for customers and municipal authorities to identify compostable packaging and to dispose of it appropriately.
