MAXIM Integrated Products, represented by Arrow Electronics , has introduced the MAX1945, the smallest 6A, 1% accurate, internal switch step-down dc-dc regulator to generate core and I/O supplies for DSPs, FPGAs, ASICs, and microprocessors.
The complete circuit fits in 0.76 inches squared of space. Applications include cellular base stations, RAID, server, telecom and network equipment.
The MAX1945 integrates power MOSFETs to reduce the size and complexity of the design. Digital soft-start, current-limit/short-circuit protections, and thermal-overload protection provide a robust design.
The MAX1945 operates from a 2.6V to 5.5V input and generates output voltages down to 0.8V. When a 3V to 5.5V bias supply is available, the device can operate from voltages as low as 2.25V.
Its selectable 500kHz or 1MHz switching frequency reduces the size and cost of external components. The MAX1945 is compatible with both ceramic and electrolytic capacitors.
For noise-sensitive applications, the MAX1945 can be synchronised with an external clock. The device also provides a 180 degree out-of-phase clock output to synchronise another switching regulator and reduce input capacitors for dual-output applications.
Voltage margining permits logic controls to shift the output voltage extremes in both (by ±5% max in the MAX1945R and ±10% max in the MAX1945S) to perform production line corner tests.
The MAX1945REUI and MAX1945SEUI come in thermally-enhanced 28-pin TSSOP packages with an exposed metal pad. They are specified for the extended industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C).
Evaluation kits and several application circuits are available to speed designs.
