Smallest, simplest step-down regulator

MAXIM Integrated Products, represented by Arrow Electronics , has introduced the MAX1951/MAX1952, the smallest and simplest 1.5A step-down regulators for cost-conscious, space-constrained applications to generate core and I/O supplies for DSPs, ASICs, and microprocessors.

The complete dc-dc converter fits in less than 20mm2. For 1.5V output applications, the MAX1951 uses small and inexpensive 10μF ceramic input and output capacitors. Applications include cellular base stations, network and telecom systems, and set-top boxes.

The MAX1951/MAX1952 integrate power MOSFETs to reduce the size and complexity of design. Digital soft-start, current-limit/short-circuit protections, and thermal-overload protection provide for a robust design.

The MAX1951 operates from 2.6V to 5.5V inputs and generates output voltages down to 0.8V with 1% accuracy. The MAX1952 generates a preset 1.8V output. Their 1MHz switching frequency reduces the size and cost of external components. Both devices are compatible with ceramic capacitors.

The MAX1951ESA/MAX1952ESA come in a small 8-pin SO package. The MAX1951/MAX1952 are specified for the extended industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C).

Evaluation kits and several application circuits are available to speed designs.
