MAXIM Integrated Products, represented in Australia by Arrow Electronics , has released the industry's first pin-selectable up/down or SPI-compatible, 1024-tap nonvolatile digital potentiometers, the MAX5481-MAX5484. They are packaged in a tiny 3mm x 3mm, 16-pin TQFN.
A feature of the device is the integrated EEPROM, which simulates mechanical potentiometers by storing the wiper position prior to power down. This capability reduces size compared to mechanical pots.
The MAX548x family also offers ratiometric and end-to-end temperature coefficients as low as 5ppm/°C and 35ppm/°C. The devices save power by requiring less than 1μA in standby and operating from a 2.7V to 5.25V single supply or ±2.5V dual supply. End-to-end resistances of 10khm and 50khm are available.
The MAX548x come in two wiper configurations - voltage divider or variable resistor. Industry standard up/down or SPI-compatible 3-wire serial interfaces on one chip make these new digital pots simple to operate.
