MAXIM Integrated Products, represented by Arrow Electronics , has introduced the MAX3735 3.3V multirate laser driver with automatic power control.
The MAX3735 is suitable for SFP and SFF-8472 compatible optical modules and meets all required digital diagnostics and timing requirements when coupled with the DS1858 controller IC.
It operates from 155Mbps to 2.7Gbps and can be used in single-mode OC-3 to OC-48 with FEC, Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel modules. Manufactured using Maxim's second-generation in-house SiGe process, the driver has a small form factor, ultra-low power consumption, and excellent jitter performance.
The MAX3735 laser driver meets all the timing and diagnostic requirements for SFP modules that incorporate the SFF-8472 features. It has bias and photo-current monitor outputs, a transmit disable feature, and transmit fault and shutdown outputs.
The MAX3735 makes it possible to implement transmit side digital diagnostics without using any external components.
Operating from a single 3.3V supply, it has a programmable bias current range of 1mA to 100mA. The modulation current can be programmed from 10mA to 60mA when dc-coupled and up to 85mA when ac-coupled.
The MAX3735 consumes only 90mW of power.
The driver accepts differential CML-compatible inputs and incorporates an automatic average power control circuit. It has edge speed transition times of only 51ps and generates only 18ps deterministic jitter and 0.7ps random jitter.
The MAX3735 is available in a 4mm x 4mm 24-pin QFN package and in die form over the extended temperature range (-40°C to 85°C). Evaluation kits and reference designs are available that demonstrate the SFP transmitter implementation using the MAX3735 and DS1858.
