MAXIM Integrated Products has released the MAX9716/MAX9717 bridge-tied load (BTL) audio amplifiers in a 3mm x 3mm, 8-pin TDFN package. They are available from Arrow Electronics .
The MAX9717 features a headphone sense input (BTL-bar/SE) that detects a headphone connection to the device. It mutes the speaker while driving the headphone as a single-ended load. The MAX9716/MAX9717 are ideal for portable audio applications such as PDAs, mobile phones, and smart phones where space and cost are at a premium.
The MAX9716/MAX9717 are single channel amplifiers. They deliver 1.4W of continuous power into a 4W load with less than 1% THD+N and operate from a 2.7V to 5V single supply. The devices also deliver 525mW of continuous power into an 4Ω load while operating from a 3V single supply. A 73dB at 1kHz power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR) allows these devices to operate from noisy digital supplies without an additional linear regulator.
The audio amplifiers are available as adjustable-gain amplifiers (MAX9716/MAX9717A), or with internally fixed gains of 6dB, 9dB, and 12dB (MAX9717B/MAX9717C/MAX9717D) to reduce component count.
The MAX9716/MAX9717 feature a low-power shutdown mode that disables the bias generator and amplifiers, reducing the quiescent current consumption below 10nA. These devices feature Maxim's click and pop suppression circuitry, which reduces audible clicks and pops during startup and shutdown.
The MAX9716 is pin-compatible with the LM4890, and available in 9-bump UCSP, 3mm x 3mm 8-pin TDFN, and 8-pin microMAX packages. The MAX9717 is pin-compatible with the TPA711 and available in 9-bump UCSP, 8-pin TDFN, and 8-pin microMAX packages. Both devices operate over the -40°C to 85°C extended temperature range.
