MAXIM, represented by Arrow Electronics , has introduced the MAX1937 and MAX1939, dual-phase, pulse-width modulation (PWM), step-down dc-dc controllers optimised for multiple generations of AMD's Athlon (MAX1937) and Hammer (MAX1939) processors.
These high-performance controllers use Maxim's proprietary Quick-PWM architecture, providing excellent transient response (within 300ns) and significantly reducing the number and cost of output capacitors.
Additionally, their 0.75% output accuracy and fast active-voltage positioning reduce output capacitor size and cost.
The MAX1937/MAX1939 offer up to 30A output-per-phase (60A total) and feature on-the-fly VID change and wide input operating voltage. These features enable the lowest cost design of CPU core supplies in desktop, mini-desktop, notebook, and server computers.
The MAX1937 and MAX1939 use 6.5V gate drivers, permitting fewer and less-expensive MOSFETs compared to 5V gate drivers in competing integrated-driver multiphase solutions.
The Maxim controllers also provide remote output voltage sensing and allow for lossless current sensing, short-circuit shutdown, and overvoltage protection.
The MAX1937EEI and MAX1939EEI come in a 28-pin QSOP package. Both controllers are specified for the extended industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C.
Evaluation boards are available in VRM and VRD form factors to speed designs.
