16-bit multichannel serial I/O ADCs

MAXIM Integrated Products, represented by Arrow Electronics , has introduced the MAX1167/MAX1168 200ksps, 16-bit multichannel ADCs. These serially interfaced ADCs connect directly to SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE devices without external logic.

The MAX1167/MAX1168 combine an input multiplexer, a high-bandwidth track/hold, an internal oscillator, 4.096V bandgap reference, and a 16-bit successive-approximation ADC.

These ADCs can operate with their internal reference or an external reference ranging from 3.8V to AVDD.

Excellent dynamic performance (THD ¾ -100dB), dc accuracy (±0.5 LSB DNL, ±1 LSB INL), high speed (200ksps), and low current consumption (2.9mA at 200ksps) make these ADCs ideal for applications such as industrial process control, instrumentation, and medical applications.

The MAX1168 includes an 8-channel multiplexer and the MAX1167 accepts up to four analogue inputs.

These parts operate from a single 4.75V to 5.25V supply (analogue supply) and feature a separate digital supply voltage (digital supply), allowing direct interface with 2.7V to 5.25V digital logic.

Their programmable scan mode converts each channel sequentially or one channel continuously.

DSP-initiated conversions are simplified with the DSP frame-sync input and output, while an 8-bit or 16-bit data transfer mode can be selected with the data-bit transfer input featured in the MAX1168.

The MAX1167/MAX1168 offer a software-programmable, automatic power-down mode between conversions with 1.1 microsecond fast wake-up.

Accessing the serial interface automatically powers up the parts, and their quick turn-on time allows them to be shut down between conversions.

This technique results in a supply current under 150 microamps at sampling rates of 10ksps.

The MAX1168 is available in a 24-pin QSOP package, while the MAX1167 is available in a 16-pin QSOP package.

Both devices operate in the commercial (0ºC to +70ºC) and extended (-40ºC to +85ºC) temperature ranges.
