ANSELL has released the full-finger VibraGuard with Gelfôm protection to reduce the risk of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), a group of conditions caused by repeated exposure of the hands to vibration.
HAVS usually comes from finger or hand contact with either a vibrating piece of equipment or work piece being held against a moving surface. Common sources of vibration are chainsaws, air operated tools, jack hammers and grinders. Symptoms and signs of HAVS include tingling and numbness, reduced grip strength, pain, stiffness and whitening of the hands. Other symptoms may include headaches, irritability, depression, forgetfulness and sleeping problems. Left untreated HAVS can cause long-term damage to sensory and motor nerves, muscles, bones and circulation. Full-fingered VibraGuard is suitable for tasks involving vibrations at frequency levels greater than 300Hz. Up to this level, vibration is localised to the palm, however at greater frequencies, the effect of vibration is more focused in the finger area.
Reducing the effects of harmful vibration requires more than simple padding. VibraGuard uses Gelfôm composite technology and nitrile-impregnated fabric to protect workers' hands from the harmful effects of vibrating machinery and the surrounding work environment. Gelfôm meets European material testing standards in all specified frequencies for EN ISO 10819 anti-vibration designation. It reduces transmission of vibration better than similar sorbothane or visco-elastic materials.
The ergonomic design of the gloves reduces fatigue and the nitrile formulation is resistant to cuts, punctures and abrasions as well as repelling oil and grease. They are silicone-free for reduced contamination in the motor and steel industries and are machine-washable to increase service life.
