Brass is any alloy of copper and zinc; the amount of zinc and copper can be varied to generate a variety of brass types with differing properties.

In comparison, bronze is mainly an alloy of copper and tin. Regardless of this difference, some types of brass are called bronzes.

Brass is a replacement alloy. It is used for decoration for its bright gold-like appearance.

It is also used for applications where low friction is needed such as locks, gears, bearings, ammunition and valves, plumbing and electrical applications as well as musical instruments such as horns and bells for their acoustic properties.
