Allied Data Systems has developed a new series of rugged computers that fit into a flame proof box, utilising a custom designed touch screen that works through a 10mm clear plastic screen.
The touch screen on these rugged computers is bonded to the plastic, and manufactured to maintain clarity for the LCD screen below, allowing the software to deliver soft reconfigurable keys for the user interface.
While normal touch screens limit the thickness of the screen to less than 1mm, these new rugged computers feature a touch screen that works through 10mm thick clear lexan. This allows the systems to be mounted into an explosion proof container for operation in coal mines and other areas where intrinsic safety are a requirement.
Able to run Windows CE or Linux, the rugged computers are based on an ARM CPU module provided by Compulab, and are able to have new software uploaded by Bluetooth.
802.11 WiFi connectivity provides further flexibility for these industrial PCs.
