HAAS Automation has introduced the EC-400 HMC, a T-base horizontal machining centre with a work cube of 510 x 510 x 510mm, a dual pallet changer (400 mm pallets) and a built-in tombstone indexer.

The EC-400 comes standard with an 8000rpm, 40-taper spindle powered by a 15kW vector dual-drive system. Also standard are a side-mount tool changer (24+1 tools), a high-volume coolant system and 24m/min rapids.

To eliminate downtime associated with manual chip removal, the EC-400 has a triple-auger chip conveyor system that removes chips from the enclosure quickly and efficiently.

For added performance, a 12,000rpm spindle powered by a 22kW vector dual drive system is available. This spindle provides additional power for heavy cuts, as well as 50% more speed for high-speed machining operations.

Both spindles feature a unique inline, direct-drive system that couples the motor directly to the spindle rather than using belts or gears. This results in less vibration, heat and noise than other drive systems, providing better surface finishes, extreme thermal stability and quiet operation.

On-the-fly wye-delta switching provides plenty of low-end torque and a wide constant-power band, without having to stop the spindle to change windings.

The EC-400 comes standard with a pallet indexer that provides 45-degree indexing for multi-sided tombstones. A high-precision face-gear indexer (1-degree indexing) is available for extremely accurate positioning, and a full 4th-axis is available for shops requiring simultaneous 4-axis motion.

The servo-driven pallet changer on the EC-400 swaps pallets in just 8 seconds, and each 400 mm pallet has a load capacity of 450 kg (300 kg with full 4th axis). A separate load station allows the operator to safely load/unload parts or change fixtures on one pallet while parts are being machined on the other to maximize spindle run time.

The EC-400 comes standard with a side-mount tool changer that holds 24 tools plus one in the spindle. A double-arm gripper swaps tools in 2.8 seconds. To further reduce cycle times and increase tool capacity, both a 40- and 70-pocket servo-driven SMTC are available that reduce tool-to-tool times to 1.6 seconds.

The EC-400 will be displayed at Austech on Stand D50 by Alfex CNC , Haas Automation’s Australian distributor.
