A PhoCheck Tiger VOC detector was used to screen for residual petroleum contamination in basements and soils following initial clean-up efforts in the aftermath of hurricane Irene.

PhoCheck Tiger VOC detectors are a range of handheld PID instruments (photo ionisation detectors) designed for rapid and accurate detection of volatile organic compounds or VOCs.

Hurricane Irene had flooded the entire street in the neighbourhood, and water marks could be seen at levels half way up the ground floor.

The oil tank in the basement had rolled onto its side, spilling its contents on the flooded basement floor.

The consultant and state regulators worked closely to remove any contaminated soil, and used a PhoCheck Tiger VOC detector to identify if the soil contained VOCs. Anything with readings above 10 ppm needed to be investigated further.

The PhoCheck Tiger indicated that all VOC readings were due to the fuel oil spill, eliminating the need to send samples to the lab.

The state official was able to use the readings from the PhoCheck Tiger VOC detector as evidence that no additional remedial action was required, allowing the home owner to move onto the next stage of the rebuild project.

PhoCheck Tiger VOC detectors are available in Australia from Air-Met Scientific Pty Ltd .
