The HSDL-9100-021 allows a user to start a conversation with the handset and set it down when they get into a car. The phone will automatically change to loudspeaker mode, allowing the user to keep talking without interruption. At the destination the handset can be picked up and used, again without interruption.
The sensor has a variable detection range from 0mm-60 mm. This allows manufacturers to customise the device for multiple applications.
Other applications include the ability to detect the opening and closing of clamshell mobile phones or to activate the power-saving mode in notebook computers. The sensor can be used for paper-edge detection in printers, photocopiers and fax machines, as well as switch on/off home appliances like table lamps without the need for mechanical switches.
