TDK Semiconductor, represented in Australia by Adilam , has released the 73S12xx family of Eight-bit system-on-chips for low-cost smart card readers. Applications include smart card readers embedded into laptops and USB-connected PIN-pad smart card readers.

Other applications include identification and digital signatures for corporate and government deployments, as well as home-banking schemes. The 72S12xx products have a high-speed 20-MIPS 80C52 core, built-in ISO-7816 interface, optional USB and PIN-pad interfaces and real time clock. The 73S12xx allows manufacturers of PIN-pads to build USB-connected PIN-pad smart card readers with features such as high-speed card communication, full-speed USB, and PIN encryption.

Versions will be introduced to cover particular applications, including a small pin-count option to allow PC manufacturers to incorporate a turnkey smart card reader into laptops or PC keyboards. A high-pin-count option will also be released for single-chip PIN-pad readers.
