Acterna has announced the deployment of its optical network management system (ONMS) for network fault detection and identification for Powercor Australia, Victoria's largest electricity distributor.
Using ONMS, Powercor will realise the ability to detect and identify network faults early, quickly take corrective measures and expedite the restoration of service for its communications customers.
In addition, the company will be able to receive swift notification of a potential problem before it becomes a service-affecting fault, allowing the electricity distributor and telecoms carrier to carry-out preventative action to protect its customers from being inconvenienced, according to Acterna Asia Pacific vice president Jim Platner.
"Since Powercor is fundamentally an electrical distribution company, the supervision, management and control of its electricity network is extremely important,” Platner said.
“Implementing Acterna's network performance and fault diagnostic equipment has also enhanced Powercor's telecommunications network communications performance - ultimately contributing to an improvement of their overall electricity service."
ONMS is a comprehensive management platform for fibre and DWDM networks, which monitors the network continuously for faults and provides the network management centre with details of the fault as well as precise location information.
This reduces network downtime and operations costs, allowing network operators to improve service quality and maintain service level agreements cost-effectively.
