The Adelaide branch of Accuweigh Load Cells, Industrial Scales and Weighing Systems recently supplied and commissioned heavy capacity platform scales for BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam Project. The heavy capacity platform scales are used at a weigh/sampling station for weighing kibbles filled with copper ore from the Prominent Hill mine.

The heavy capacity platform scales are fully galvanised and measure 3 metres by 3 metres and are fitted with 4 x 30t capacity load cells. The heavy capacity platform scales have a substantial overload range, allowing for the occasional mishap with the loading and unloading of the kibbles which can weigh up to 20t each when filled with copper ore.

After each kibble is weighed on the platform scales, an ore sample is also weighed on a small sampling scale capacity which is linked to an Accuweigh supplied driver control station (DCS). Custom software records the weight data from both sets of scales and produces a printed ticket showing itemised weights of each kibble and the sample weights.

The DCS is linked to the network server at BHP so the system can also be accessed by office staff to generate daily reports of copper ore received over the heavy capacity platform scale.
