AREVA T&D upgrades facilities; adds new equipment and second electrical test laboratory
AREVA T&D, in response to strong market demands, is upgrading its facilities with the addition of new equipment and a second electrical test laboratory capable of handling transformers of up to 145kV. The test laboratory will provide full type test capabilities and holds NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) Certification. Importantly, this investment further frees up the existing test facility, offering additional capacity across the broad range of transformers manufactured at Rocklea.
One of eight AREVA T&D power transformer factories worldwide, the Rocklea facility is the only factory in Australia, with the capabilities to build, test and repair large power transformers. The factory has been in operation in the Brisbane suburb of Rocklea for nearly 60 years. The facility includes a 15,000 m2 covered manufacturing area, with a long standing and highly trained team of professional and experienced people involved in designing, building, testing and servicing transformers. The factory has specialised equipment including fully automated core cutting lines, vapour phase drying facilities, and a fully-equipped oil testing laboratory.
Activities at the Rocklea factory are carried out within the quality framework of ISO 9001:2000, Environmental accreditation to AS14001 and OH&S accreditation to ISO18001 (AS4801), making AREVA T&D a supplier of choice of AREVA T&D’s customers. The continuous improvement culture enjoyed at Rocklea is supported by ongoing employee training and 5S improvement programmes.
With a multi-disciplined engineering team, highly skilled and experienced workforce, and extensive facilities, AREVA has the ability to bring localised value engineering from a global base of expertise to utilities, railways, mining and industrial segments that need transformers from 5 to 1,500 MVA.
AREVA’s commitment to its local customers does not end with the manufacturing and testing of a transformer. Customers can also benefit from expert transformer installation, condition assessment, training and support, thereby adding further value to the initial investment commitment on an on-going basis.
The new investment clearly shows that the AREVA T&D Rocklea power transformer factory is looking to the future, and with the additional test capacity AREVA T&D offers a choice for high quality locally manufactured transformers, delivered within the tight time frames demanded by the domestic T&D market.
