Transpower’s new Market Management System went live on July 21st, successfully dispatching generation, managing system security and running the real-time electricity market.
The new Market Management System is an upgrade of the solution that was deployed by AREVA T&D Australia in 1996 and incorporates advanced visualisation and a state-of-the-art energy and reserve market clearance solution that is based on a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).
AREVA T&D supplied Transpower with their e-terra range of solutions, including e-terramarket, eterramarketclearing, e-terrasource and e-terrarchive.
The new Market Management System is fully integrated with the AREVA T&D Energy Management System that was successfully upgraded in 2007. Together, the two systems manage the dispatch and transmission of all electricity generated in New Zealand.
As well as owning New Zealand’s National Grid, Transpower is the System Operator responsible for running the wholesale electricity market, ensuring network security and dispatching of generation.
Mr Kieran Devine, General Manager, System Operations, Transpower said, “The new system is vital to the efficient management of electricity flows around New Zealand and provides Transpower with new, more accurate, real time information enabling maximium use of the grid and allowing the System Operator to deliver a world class service.”
Jean-Michel Cornille, Automation Executive VP, AREVA T&D said, “This represents another significant milestone in our delivery of mission critical solutions to Transpower, beginning with the Energy Management System in 1992 and the initial AREVA T&D Market System deployment in 1996.”
