APMS responded to an urgent request from ONESTEEL Ardrossan to repair their 120m long shipping conveyor, which had failed while heavily laden with ore for export.
The four stage Hansen Gearbox had snapped an input shaft while loading a ship for export. APMS were given the task of removing the Hansen Gearbox and 132kw electric motor and transporting it to ONESTEEL’s Salisbury South workshops for overhaul/repair, manufacturing a new input shaft, fitting new bearings and seals to all shafts, and setting all clearances to factory specifications.
The task also involved fitting new Sumitomo Seisa double engagement gear couplings to the input and output drive shafts and transporting the unit back to site and reinstallation.
ONESTEEL supplied new Cooper split bearings and asked APMS to install them on the headshaft as part of the conveyor rehabilitation.
The 120mx1200mm belt was still laden with 25tonne of ore that could not be removed easily to assist the upgrade. APMS manufactured a reinforcement beam to mount on the head drum hood allowing the use of 2 x hand operated winches to hold back the head drum while the old bearings were removed one at a time and the new Cooper splits were fitted and aligned.
Once the head drum bearings were fitted, the Sumitomo Seisa gear coupling half was fitted to the headshaft. The rebuilt Hansen Gearbox was fitted and aligned to the headshaft, followed by the 132kw electric motor. APMS finished this critical repair on time and on budget.
