APEX develop a robotic cell for strapping and palletising metal studs

APEX  Automation and Robotics has supplied robotic systems for packaging and palletising a variety of products with the weight of those products ranging from a few hundred grams to few hundred kilograms.

Faced with a challenging project requiring the collection, bundling, strapping and palletising of mine roof bolts that varied in length from 600mm up to 3000mm with bundles weighing up to 250kg, APEX Automation and Robotics developed a robotic cell for strapping and palletising metal studs.

An ABB - IRB 7600 robot with a payload of 400kg was utilised in the robotic cell that included an automatic Polyester (PET) strapping machine.

The robot picks up each bundle of 5 bolts and presents the first end of the bolts to the strapping machine before spinning the bundle around to strap the other end.

The small bundles form a large pack that is presented by the robot to the strapping machine. Both ends are strapped and the packs are automatically palletised.

The robot also picks and removes single bolts for QA tests every 500 bolts or can be programmed to perform this function on demand.

Two palletising bays are separated by light curtains and when a pallet is complete in one bay, the robot moves to the other bay so that production can continue uninterrupted.

APEX Automation and Robotics also installed collisions detection software in the robot program due to the massive payload and to prevent damages in the case of malfunction.

This robotic cell is another system supplied by APEX Automation and Robotics that improves OH & S and reduces production cost in the metal manufacturing industry.
