AMS Instrumentation and Calibration introduces a new range of flow meters designed to measure boil-off gas (BOG) in LNG tanker fleets.

The new ST100 Series thermal mass air/gas flow meter from Fluid Components International (FCI) enables ship propulsion systems to operate efficiently while complying with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.

The LNG cargo in LNG tanker fleets generates waste gas, commonly known as boil-off gas (BOG). Natural gas is transported by first converting it into LNG, which involves cryogenically cooling the natural gas to -163°C at atmospheric pressure, and condensing it to a liquid ready for transport. BOG results when the LNG vaporises due to ambient heat input during transport.

Ships use the LNG BOG produced during transport as fuel for their boilers. On January 1, 2013 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) implemented an amendment to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships to increase the energy efficiency of ships while reducing CO2 emissions that cause global warming. Accurate flow measurement of BOG piped to the boilers is critical to running the boilers more efficiently.

The ST110 Series flow meter from FCI meets the accuracy requirements for measuring BOG aboard tankers, and at land terminals, storage facilities and points of distribution. Combining powerful electronic features and an advanced flow sensor design, the new ST110 Series air/gas flow meters provide precision measurement, reliability and economy. The ST110 is designed for complex gas measurements such as LNG and methane.

The ST110 is equipped with FCI’s unique VeriCal in-situ calibration verification system that allows the flow meter to perform periodic field functional testing and calibration verification of its measurement performance without requiring extraction from the pipe or process, preventing shutdowns for a lengthy period.

For BOG measurement, the ST110 flow meter with VeriCal features an internal purge tube that runs the length of the probe to the sensor and allows the operator to generate a known flow across the sensor element. The resultant signal output can then be compared to the factory baseline test certificate.

The ST110 flow meter’s electronics is designed to meet both current and future requirements for BOG measurement outputs, process information and communications, providing a solution regardless of whether the need is for 4-20 mA analogue, frequency/pulse, alarm relays or digital bus communications such as HART, Fieldbus, Profibus or Modbus.

Key features of FCI’s insertion style ST110 flow meters include graphical, multivariable, backlit local LCD display/readout for continuous display of all process measurements, alarm status and service diagnostics; up to five calibration groups supporting a broad flow range, differing gas mixtures and multiple gases, obtaining over a 500:1 turndown; onboard data logger with a removable 2GB micro-SD memory card storing 21 million readings; and thermal flow sensing element measuring flow from 0.25 to 1000 SFPS (0.07 NMPS to 305 NMPS) with accuracy of ±0.75 percent of reading, ±0.5 percent of full scale.

Designed for demanding oil and gas industry applications, the ST110 flow meter operates at up to 454°C and is available with both integral and remote 300-metre electronic versions. The ST110 includes system wide agency approvals for hazardous environments, and a rugged NEMA 4X/IP67 rated 316 stainless steel enclosure. Approvals include SIL-1, ATEX, IECEx, FM and FMc.
