ABB , the leading power and automation technology group has been awarded an A$5 million contract to supply an Industrial distributed control system for Australian Paper‘s Maryvale mill in Victoria, Australia. In addition ABB has secured a further a $1 million in orders for MV switchgear, LV relays, and Variable Drives systems.
Australian Paper and ABB have been partners for many years and seen the supply of ABB control systems and drives for their paper machines and process areas, with this project culminating as a result of close collaboration of ABB’s control system and process experts with the Australian Paper Pulp Mill Project engineers and consultants.
All project engineering, software configuration, testing and factory acceptance tests will be conducted at ABB’s Notting Hill facility in Melbourne. A decisive factor for Australian Paper to place the order on ABB was its competence and knowledge and the incorporation of a locally based company for engineering and commissioning.
The ABB process control system will provide a common data and process control network, and is based on the latest ABB Industrial IT platform using AC800M controllers, S800I/O and Operate IT.
It will integrate all pulp mill operations, connecting a new central control room to the system servers and all of the applications and process controls from the continuous digester, the bleach plant, the woodyard, the wetlap machine, the pulp store, the batch digester and chemical recovery area.
The delivery will also include ABB advanced process management software to monitor and control the batch digester process.
Australian Paper is the sole manufacturer of fine papers in Australia, and part of the PaperlinX Group. Australian Paper is making an A$258 million investment in developing the pulping facilities at Maryvale. The Maryvale Mill is a large pulp and paper making facility, and is situated at Morwell, Victoria, 150km east of Melbourne.
The project will involve both replacing and upgrading parts of the existing plant with new world-class facilities that will manufacture elementally chlorine free pulp. It will mean that the company has greater ability to meet customer demand for high quality fine papers, which will enhance the long term viability of the mill.
