ABB, a specialist global provider of power and automation technologies has retained its leading worldwide market position in the core automation segment of distributed control systems.
ABB Australia represents the ABB Group’s interests in Australia.
According to the ARC Advisory Group’s study on ‘Distributed Control Systems Worldwide Outlook’, while the DCS (distributed control system) market had suffered a hit in 2009, ABB actually increased its worldwide market share in the same period.
The study also reports that the overall market for distributed control systems declined by just under 7 percent between 2008 and 2009.
According to ARC, the market growth should accelerate after 2011 and the compound annual growth rate for this segment through 2014 is predicted at 4%. Historically, the process automation market has experienced slow but steady growth.
The need for end users in all industries to reduce energy consumption and optimise raw materials costs remains among the top cost pressures affecting manufacturers today.
Larry O'Brien, Research Director for Process Industries, ARC states that the domains of automation and electrification are becoming increasingly entwined due to the substantial potential for energy savings, increased reliability and uptime as well as reduced maintenance costs.
He adds that ABB’s ability to integrate the process control, process electrification and power distribution as well as management portions of a plant with System 800xA by leveraging the IEC61850 standard offers end users significant operational benefits.
According to the study, ABB was also the regional market share leader for Europe/Mid East/Africa (EMEA) in addition to being the worldwide leader in key global verticals including Upstream Oil & Gas, Pulp and Paper as well as Cement and Glass.
Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division says that ABB’s commitment to their installed base customers, a dedicated global services team as well as leading-edge technology provide an unbeatable combination to help their customers get the most value out of their existing ABB control system investment.
