3M Food Safety has announced that it will extend its range of petrifilm plates for food microbiology testing to include petrifilm aqua plates, bringing reliability and convenience to the water and beverage industries.

Sample-ready, petrifilm aqua plates are used in the microbial testing of bottled water, with each plate containing a water-soluble gelling agent, nutrients and indicators in a dry, shelf-stable format.

Senior Technical Service Specialist for 3M Food Safety, Bob Young, says that the company is excited to be able to bring the reliability of its petrifilm plates to the beverage industry.

“For companies in this sector, this innovative method provides a new alternative testing process to traditional agar petri dishes," he comments.

The petrifilm aqua plates are capable of testing for the four most common contaminates that can threaten a bottled water product, which are:

  • heterotrophic count
  • coliform
  • yeast and mould; and
  • enterobacteriaceae.
“The plates are easy to use and offer quality assurance professionals the opportunity to streamline their testing process, and can save companies considerable time and money,” adds Eric Amann, 3M Food Safety Global Marketing Development Manager.
