Selective laser melting or SLM is an innovative metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology that utilises rapid prototyping services to manufacture components directly from CAD data.
SLM is one of the fastest growing AM methods of all layered manufacturing systems and is now readily known as the method of choice when sourcing low volume digitally manufactured parts.
One of the most unique features of the selective laser melting machine process is that no support structures are required during manufacture.
This enables production of very complicated components that may not have been possible to manufacture by any other traditional manufacturing method.
The selective laser melting machine uses commercially available metallic powders to produce fully dense metal parts in materials including titanium, stainless steel, cobalt chrome and tool steel.
The SLM machine will be undertaking initial testing, calibration and parameter setting in titanium for the next few months.
Other materials will be added to the SLM service when it is made commercially available in early 2011.
