TE Connectivity (TE) introduces its high performance Raychem mining couplers designed for easier and faster installation, better performance and safer operations with high resistance to damage from wear and tear.
Juan Darritchon, product manager, TE Energy explains that the new Raychem mining couplers were designed in response to the need for increased electrical safety, flexibility and efficiency in mining applications. Conventional couplers use compressed grommet sealing and have 2mm to 3mm cable size tolerance with no way to confirm proper seal fit, leading to water ingress and causing failures and safety hazards. Traditional connectors also require soldering, which is time-consuming, dependent on skill level and a safety hazard for personnel.
TE’s new Raychem couplers address these challenges with range-taking IP68H rated cable entry seals that can be visually inspected, and range-taking shear bolt connectors requiring just two sizes to cover #6 AWG to 500 MCM cables. According to Darritchon, shear heads ensure that the correct torque is applied to each bolt for optimal contact force.
Raychem’s innovations will support mining customers seeking easier installation and maintenance, and greater performance, reliability and service life.
Key features of Raychem mining couplers include internal phase-to-phase ground barriers to avoid high energy and potentially explosive phase-to-phase faults; enhanced electrical performance achieved with high strength, impact resistant insulators powered with Raychem proprietary ZnO stress grading terminations; Guroflex MV cold pour filling compound; 8 kV/ 400 A and 15 kV/ 500 A ratings; individually replaceable insulators; range-taking expanded seal system; shear bolt connectors with front-end serviceable contacts; phase ground barriers; and 3-bolt quick-flip closure along with padlock capability.
Raychem’s ruggedised couplers are compatible with other products in the industry, making them highly flexible and interchangeable.
