CARNEGIE Wave Energy has successfully tested its first CETO 5 wave energy generator, with the device surviving hundreds of hours in the ocean and 3.8m high waves.

The tests are part of the Perth Wave Energy Project, which has been under construction for approximately 12 months beginning with the installation of the CETO 5 Unit offshore foundations last summer.

More than $30m has been invested in the design, development and construction of the project. The CETO technology takes a unique approach to wave power by generating both power and water from the ocean swell while remaining fully submerged beneath the ocean surface, increasing its ability to survive large storms.

According to Carnegie Wave Energy, the CETO 5 unit is continuing to perform in line with expectations, while it prepared to assemble and test a second and third CETO 5 unit at Henderson, WA.

The energy generated by the test units feed a load bank onshore, but Western Power has approved a grid connection for the CETO 5 units, which will occur soon.
