WABCO Holdings Inc. announces the launch of its industry-first modular braking system platform (mBSP).
WABCO’s new technology, which has already won contract awards from two global commercial vehicle manufacturers headquartered in Europe, features innovative braking architecture that now enables customers to interchangeably equip their diverse global truck and bus platforms with anti-lock braking (ABS) or electronic braking (EBS) systems based on regional market or regulatory requirements worldwide.
WABCO mBSP reduces the number of ABS components by 50 percent to the same amount of components as in EBS.
Built on decades of experience gained from pioneering advanced braking systems for the commercial vehicle industry, WABCO’s next generation braking platform mBSP features the highest degree of standardisation in the industry across both components and system software of its ABS and EBS systems.
Vehicle manufacturers can leverage WABCO’s unique mBSP system to significantly reduce system development, installation and software testing time, accelerate homologation for their diverse brands and vehicle portfolios globally, and bring new trucks and buses to market faster. The customer can also seamless integrate their own software and system functionalities into WABCO mBSP.
Since the ABS and EBS components in WABCO’s modular braking system use the same mounting interfaces and connections on the commercial vehicle platform, global truck and bus makers can tailor their vehicle platforms to regional regulatory requirements by interchangeably equipping them with either ABS or EBS. The modular system enables commercial vehicle manufacturers to develop a range from value-based to premium truck and bus models on the same vehicle platforms depending on market needs.
Describing the development as game-changing, Jacques Esculier, WABCO Chairman and Chief Executive Officer explains that the new modular braking system offers a high degree of flexibility and scalability for trucks and buses globally.
WABCO has also entered into agreements with two global commercial vehicle manufacturers headquartered in Europe for their braking solution. In the first deal, WABCO will supply mBSP with ABS and EBS applications to the customer to equip its next generation of trucks and buses being manufactured in Europe, North America, Brazil and India from 2017 through 2021. Representing the single largest deal in WABCO history, the company will supply its advanced braking systems to support production of more than 450,000 new trucks and buses for several of the customer’s leading vehicle brands worldwide.
WABCO will also provide EBS to a range of commercial vehicles for another customer from 2018 through 2022. The EBS systems will be fitted in approximately 175,000 of this customer’s new trucks to serve markets across Europe.
WABCO will showcase its breakthrough mBSP technology at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2014, Hall 16 Stand B10 at the Hanover Exhibition Center, Hanover, Germany in September.
