Smart Lid Systems has patented its heat-detecting beverage lids in markets covering 3.5 billion people and hopes to expand the reach of the innovation that it began rolling out in Sydney cafes earlier this year.

Plastics News reports that the Kensington-based business, run by Anthony Bayss, father and his brother, was the result of 12 years of R&D, and was created in collaboration with North Rocks, Sydney’s Rema Industries and Servies

The coffee lids, which turn bright red when their contents are above 118 degrees F (48 degrees C), are made of high-impact polystyrene and plastic additives.

"The biggest response to date has been from local coffee drinkers. ... It is not always easy to persuade cafe owners to change their packaging supplies," Bayss said, according to Plastics News.

The lids were introduced in August through cafes in Sydney operated by Taste Food Group.

The company has patented its invention in the US, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

"We are taking baby steps at this stage, but it may require big steps soon if we want to break into the U.S. and Europe,” said Bayss.

"We hope to convince cafes they can stand out in a crowd, be a little different, by offering our Smart Lid. I am sure their customers will appreciate it."
