Two new locomotives have been added by Pacific National for use in the BlueScope rail operations in Port Kembla, New South Wales. Pacific National, a division of Asciano Limited, has taken delivery of two National Railway Equipment (NRE) Company N-ViroMotive locomotives.
Based on the proven NRE Gen Set Technology and powered by the Cummins QSK19 engine, the new locomotives have been custom designed for the Port Kembla operation, with a strong focus on increased safety, visibility, comfort and efficiency. The new locomotives will also create better environmental outcomes by reducing carbon and noise emissions.
Andrew Adam, General Manager, Intermodal, Pacific National explains that the investment in the new rolling stock is part of a broader effort to adopt the best technology to improve efficiency and customer service across their operations. In addition to boosting the efficiency of Pacific National’s BlueScope rail operations in Port Kembla, the new locomotives will also improve their safety and environment performance and help minimise noise impacts in the local community.
Pacific National worked closely with NRE teams during the design and manufacturing phases to create a locomotive that met the unique challenges of the industrial steel making environment in Port Kembla. Manufactured in the United States, the new locomotives offer excellent visibility and ergonomic qualities to meet Pacific National’s local requirements.
The first two locomotives are currently being commissioned in Sydney and are expected to enter operation in August 2014.
