US president Barack Obama is to announce two new manufacturing hubs on Tuesday.
According to an unnamed White House official quoted by Reuters and others over the weekend, Obama will announce two institutes – in Detroit and Chicago – with private funding matching a $US 140 million contribution from the Department of Defense.
Detroit institute will be focussed on lightweight, high-performance metals and
alloys and the Chicago facility on digital manufacturing, CNN reports.
news follows last month’s announcement of the Next Generation Power Electronics Institute at Raleigh, North Carolina. The president has pledged 45 such hubs by
2020 as part of his National Network for Manufacturing Innovation plan.
