Mining scholarship on offer for NSW high school students

The NSW Minerals Council and its mining company partners are inviting high school students to apply for the 2014 NSW Mining Scholarships program.

The program is aimed at encouraging and assisting senior high school students to pursue a career in the mining sector.

The program is open to students from eligible schools across the Illawarra, Central West and the Hunter Valley who are studying minerals related subjects such as maths and science in Year 11/12 and considering entering a mining related tertiary education.

Potential university subjects can include, but are not limited to Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mining, Environmental), Geology, Geoscience, IT, Health and Safety, Surveying, Legal, Operations and Environmental Science

Sponsored students will receive $500 in Year 11, $1,000 in Year 12 and a further $2,000 in sponsorship if they complete their first year of a minerals related tertiary course.

The lucky students are also are also matched with a ‘mentor’ from a local company, providing valuable contact with the industry.

“Through the program, students get involved in mining-related activities and have contact with the industry and associated organisations such as sponsoring companies and universities,” NSW Minerals Council Chief Stephen Galilee said.

He said the program ensured the mining industry would meet its skill requirement needs into the future.

In 2013 the program supported 82 students across NSW.

Companies involved in 2014 program include Alkane Resources, BHP Billiton - Illawarra Coal, BHP Billiton - NSW Energy Coal, Bloomfield Collieries, Iluka Resources, Newcrest Mining – Cadia Valley Operations, Peabody Energy Australia, Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania, Thiess – Mount Owen and Vale Australia.
