The story of Australia’s mining sector has been penned, with the release of The Miners book.

The brainchild of Atlas Iron chairman David Flannagan, the book tells the story of Australia’s mining industry through the eyes of those involved in it.

Written by long-time mining journalist Barry Avery the book highlights stories from an industry that has driven Australia’s modern day growth and includes interviews with the likes of Andrew Forrest and Gina Rinehart.

Flannagan said the book discusses both the ups and the downs of the sector.

"It's not just telling the good side of mining," he said.

"[The] mining industry has made mistakes but it's important to tell people we've learned from those mistakes.

"We live here too, we recognise Australia has a mineral endowment for the good of Australian people, so let's tell that story and we found that we generated momentum."

The publication also seeks to answer questions like who is Australia’s most respected CEO, where are Australia’s next big ore bodies, and why should young Australians consider mining as a career?

“As varied and subjective the responses might be, The Miners hopes to tell a patch-work story which offers a fair and honest reflection of the current state of play in our business,” The Miners team stated.

Flannagan said one of his favourite stories documented in the book comes from Pilbara prospector Denis O'Meara, who discusses his grievances with the Gillard government's mining tax,The ABC reports.

"'You will take my tenement from me. You'll prize the title from my cold, lifeless hands'," he said.

"He was referring to the mining tax where the Government announced that it was going to resume ownership of 40 per cent of all tenements of the country.

"That's covered quite extensively to try and inform government of the risks that really are presented in the industry."

Funded by the mining industry, all proceeds from The Miners will go to the Starlight Foundation.
