A miner has been killed in a rockfall at the Freeport McMoran Grasberg mine in Indonesia.
The incident occurred late on Friday night, local time, according to the mine’s facebook page.
“The incident occurred in the area of West Bay Muck underground mine Grasberg Block Cave (GBC), PT Freeport Indonesia,” the company stated.
It happened whilst workers were installing safety supports into the tunnel’s ceiling.
“The fall occurred in the form of rock and soil while ground support activities were being conducted, covering a jumbo drill.
“One operator, from a team of two, at the jumbo drill survived.”
Underground mine emergency response teams responded to the incident and were able to recover the remaining miner, named as Boby Hermawan, however he later died from his injuries at the scene.
“PTFI management and its family express deep condolences to the bereaved family,” the miner said in a company statement.
“Our prayers accompany the deceased who had been part of the PTFI family and the families left behind.”
Last year the mine suffered a catastrophic collapse, in which 28 people were killed.
