The 54th Southern Mines Rescue Competition was held in the Illawarra over the weekend, with ‘Appin Pink’ taking out first place in the annual event.

The competition was held at Illawarra Coal’s Appin Mine, where rescue teams from around the area were tested on their ability to perform emergency rescues in both  underground and surface applications.

The miners were also asked to show their first aid skills, firefighting ability and knowledge on the theories of mine safety and rescue.

Eight teams from various mines competed in the local competition, including teams from Dendrobium, West Cliff, Gujarat NRE, Metropolitan and Tahmoor.

The event is held throughout mines in NSW to allow workers to improve their competency in case of a real emergency.
