A man has fallen to his death at a Mount Isa mineshaft on Saturday morning.

Mt Isa police said it appears that the man was intoxicated, and had climbed a fence outside of business hours to enter the Hard Times Mine, a local mining museum, according to the North West Star.

Police said the 27 year-old had attempted to climb the headframe above the Hard Times mineshaft, but slipped and fell from the structure.

The old mineshaft is operated by the local council, and used during the week to give guided tours, and educate tourists about the history of mining in Mt Isa.

Police and ambulance staff responded to a call at 11.30am on Saturday and set up a crime scene at the corner of Marian and Corbould streets in Mount Isa.

Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) are currently investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for Queensland police has said the death is not suspicious.
