ADELAIDE-based Ellex Medical Lasers says its 2RT retinal therapy laser systems have come online in Europe.

In June, Ellex Medical Lasers established sales contracts for its 2RT systems in Germany and Austria out of its regional HQ in Berlin. The devices have now been installed and commissioned, with the first patients having been treated.

According to Ellex, these contracts are the first commercial sales of its 2RT systems since the CE Mark was granted in February 2014 for the use of the laser system to treat early stage Aged-Related Macular Degeneration.

2RT, or Retinal Rejuvenation Therapy, is a technology that delivers nanosecond pulses of laser energy which damage the internal cell structure of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) melanosomes, without breaking the cell’s outer membrane.

This stimulates a process of cellular rejuvenation and regeneration on the transport mechanism of the retina, which preserves or improves functional vision, reducing the progression of macular degeneration.

According to Ellex Medical Lasers, this approach retains the therapeutic effect of laser therapy whilst eliminating the thermal tissue damage inherent in conventional retinal photocoagulation laser treatment.
