Melior Resources has announced it will reopen the Goondicum mineral sands mine next March, creating 50 new mining jobs.

It comes as the miner restarts operations at the project, as well as the upgrade works.

Speaking on the restart Melior CEO Mark McCauley said"we are excited to commence the restart of the Goondicum operations; it is a substantial milestone for Melior and will position the company as a significant low-cost producer of ilmenite".

Upgrade works at the site include increasing throughput at the processing plant by 50 per cent, installation of additional equipment to enhance recovery; and the construction of a new access road to the mine, cutting haulage distance to port by around 35 per cent, or 100 kilometres.

Melior Resources has bought out previous owner of the Goondicum mine, Belridge Enterprises, under the agreement it would spend $US15 million to restart the mothballed operation.

35 jobs were lost last year when the mine, located near Monto, went into care and maintenance as a result of falling ilmenite prices.

The operation will now employ 80 personnel at the site.
