Gina Rinehart’s joint venture company GVK Hancock has appointed a former Rio Tinto heavyweight as its new CEO.
The India-Australia company announced Darren Yeates, whose previous experience includes COO and acting CEO for Rio Tinto Coal Australia, would take over from outgoing managing director Paul Mulder.
In statement the company said it welcomes the experience Yeates will bring to the company as it reaches the final development staged of its two flagship Galilee Basin coal projects.
“I am very pleased with the extensive leadership and experience that Mr Yeates will bring to our organisation,” GVK Reddy, the founder and chairman of GVK Power and Infrastructure, said in a statement.
“I am extremely confident that Mr Yeates’ in-depth operational and project management experience will complement our existing management team and drive our Galilee Basin projects to operational reality.”
Yeates said his focus will be on delivering the projects, describing them as “one of the most significant pieces of regional and economic development Queensland has seen for decades.”
