A food processing factory at Lane Cove was evacuated yesterday due to fears caused by an overheating grain silo.

NSW Fire and Rescue’s presence at the site was announced at 3:12 pm on Twitter yesterday.

AAP reported at 8 pm last night that the silo was believed to bear near exploding, and firefighters had pumped carbon dioxide into the structure to try and bring the temperature down.

"If the temperature increases over the next few hours we could have some problems," Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Ian Krimmer told AAP.

"If the temperature remains static or decreases we'll be a lot happier."
