Cobham Aviation has won a four year contract to provide FIFO services to Gold Fields' Granny Smith and Darlot mines in WA.
The contract, which runs from next month until late 2018, will see six weekly return flights to the mines, which have gravel runways.
According to Cobham it was selected for the services at is is the only aviation company in Australia that operates jet aircraft that can land on gravel runways.
As part of this new contract Cobham is supplying an 82 seat RJ-85 jet for the first time in Australia, which it will equip with a gravel kit for landing at Granny Smith and Darlot, which are located in the Yilgarn region of WA, just north of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
“Replacing our turboprop services with jet services represents great value for money and will increase efficiencies as it enables us to consolidate our FIFO schedule and still travel direct to our sites with gravel runways, while increasing passenger comfort,” Gold Fields Australia executive vice president Richard Weston said.
