Load Mover Inc. is a Bloomington, MN based designer and manufacturer of battery-powered material handling equipment for industrial environments.

The company recently supplied a walkie electric tug designed to reduce risk of push/pull injuries at a local mail handling facility.

Having audited the work floor for areas of ergonomic concern, the general manager of the mail handling facility sought to prioritise the need to reduce risk of push/pull injuries, given the aging workforce. While a few initiatives had been taken to reduce the need for manual material handling, there were still areas in the facility where workers had few options.

Heavy mail carts weighing upwards of 1400 lbs. were typically pulled with large rider tugs. However, the narrow aisles made it difficult for the workers to use the rider tug along the150-foot long path. The workers struggled with manually manoeuvring the heavy carts by hand, which heightened the risk of injury. Pushing and pulling are cited by OSHA as two of the five main repetitive movements that lead to long-term injury.

The general manager of the facility consulted with Load Mover Inc. for a suitable solution and found that a Load Mover walkie tugger seemed to address all the injury concerns. Load Mover engineers evaluated the application and recommended the Load Mover Xtra-400 featuring a manual 5th wheel, which engages and holds the vertical pipe located on each mail cart. Load Mover specified a unit smaller and more manoeuvrable than the riding unit.
