The Bowen Storage team was called in by Jefferson Automotive Group to work on a warehouse storage overhaul project.

An automotive parts distribution and service centre in Braeside, Jefferson Automotive Group wanted the warehouse layout to be redesigned to increase storage capacity, efficiency and productivity, and enable the Jefferson team to more effectively deliver the best service experience possible to their automotive network.

The brief
As the central distribution hub of automotive spare parts for several automotive dealerships across the nation, Jefferson Group wanted to increase the amount of stock they were able to hold as well as accommodate recent changes to parts packaging, which had rendered their traditional storage methods ineffective. The brief was to increase warehouse storage capacity, design and supply storage solutions, and project-manage the installation over several stages.

The solution

Warehouse layout
Bowen Storage reconfigured the warehouse layout to improve efficiency and throughput, including moving the courier pick-up area to the rear of the warehouse where there was better car parking and loading facilities. Spare parts shelving was also relocated, increasing available floor space for pallet racking.

Storage design
An innovative storage solution for vehicle bumper bars was designed, supplied and implemented, addressing the common challenge among automotive spare parts dealers to store bulky stock safely and efficiently.

Storage for bulky parts
Mesh decking to cater for the varying sizes and shapes of automotive spare parts was supplied for the pallet racking, affording Jefferson Group greater flexibility when storing inventory. By relocating the spare parts shelving, a new Metalsistem Superbuild pallet racking system was added to the bulk storage area, thereby further increasing storage capacity.

Reduced storage footprint
Boscotek high density drawer storage cabinets were supplied and installed, saving up to 30% on the footprint of traditional small parts storage methods. Ideally suited to small automotive parts, this compact solution also improved productivity by increasing the ease and speed with which parts could be identified and retrieved.

Project management
Bowen Storage managed the installation of the project in two stages over four weeks. Downtime was minimised by liaising closely with the client and installing the storage systems around their existing stock and daily order picking schedules.
