The Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which was founded in 1570 and is Britain's oldest manufacturing firm, has launched its first online store.

The Guardian reports that the company has decided to start selling its handbells and doorbells direct to the consumer. To do so it has set up an online store using Tictail, a Swedish service that lets business owners set up online shops free of charge.

Tictail has 30,000 stores around the world and does not take a cut of its clients’ sales. It makes a profit by the sale of functionality such as voucher codes, mailing lists and analytical tools.

Located in East London, The Whitechapel Bell Foundry has produced some famous bells in its 400-plus years of operation. These include the Liberty Bell, an icon of American independence, which it cast in 1752.

Then, in 1856 the company cast Big Ben. The bell cracked while being tested and had to be recast in 1858.
