Securing approval for extended working hours, BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) will now be allowed to complete construction work at its Hay Point extension project on Sundays and public holidays.
The Daily Mercury reports the company will be able to carry out pile-driving operations to build a new trestle and berth at the Hay Point site.
Pile-driving operations will now take place from Monday to Saturday from 6.30am to 6.30pm as well as on Sundays and public holidays from 9am until 4pm.
Works for stage three of the coal terminal expansions are expected to be completed over the next six months.
"We expect the impact on the local community to be minimal," a BMA spokesperson said.
"The actual construction piling noise lasts for about 30-45 minutes for each pile and the project undertakes regular noise monitoring to assess performance against our allowable noise criteria."
It is expected extending the working hours will cut 20 days off the project’s schedule.
